The Manayunk Canal Cleanup is a volunteer community service day where members of the Manayunk and Roxborough Community are gathering together to celebrate the environment and take care or our neighborhood by spending a day cleaning up the towpath.  Projects include: repaving the path, cleaning the trash and debris from the canal, weeding, planting and removing graffiti.  The cleanup is sponsored by Manayunk Development Corporation and Burbon Blue.  Parking available at the Lock Street Lot.  Meet at Bourbon Blue at 9:30am.  Hope to see you there!

Community Pet Day September 18  10am-1pm

Veterinarians will give out low-cost vaccinations ($15 for rabies and distemper) and microchips ($10), along with tips on training, dog safety and animal health.  Microchips will be FREE for pit bulls/pit bull mixes.   They will also have info on low-cost spay/neuter and pit bulls/pit bull mixes can receive vouchers for heavily subsidized spay/neuter surgeries ($40, which includes pre-op exam, surgery, post-op pain meds, one year of vaccinations and e-collar).  No registration is required, and the event is open to everyone (no age, income or residency requirements).  This is a great opportunity for pet owners in need!  For more information, please contact PAWS at 215-298-9680 or www.phillypaws.org

Laurel Hill Cemetery’s Annual Woof, Wag n’ Walk October 9   10am-12pm

West Laurel Hill Cemetery’s annual Woof, Wag n’ Walk will benefit Main Line Animal Rescue and Montgomery County SPCA.  People and pooches alike are invited to enjoy a mile-long guided tour of cemetery grounds where you’ll visit the burial places of some of the most famous residents.  After the walk, there will be a raffle and free doggie goodie bags.  The tour will depart from the Conservatory on the grounds of West Laurel Hill Cemetary, 215 Belmont Ave, Bala Cynwyd.  Donations support Main Line Animal Rescue and Montgomery County SPCA.  Special thanks to Braxton’s Animal Works for their continued generous support!

If your pet is experiencing these symptoms:

• immediately remove them from the heat
• wet their coat down with cool, but not cold, water. Cooling too quickly can be counter productive and cause other life-threatening medical problems
• DO NOT force liquids
• Call your veterinarian, or UPenn Emergency 215-746-8911

Prevention is best!

• Provide access to water at all times
• NEVER leave your pet in a parked car, even in the shade
• Restrict exercise in the hot weather. If possible, limit outside activities during the hottest hours of the day, usually 10am-3pm
• Keep your dog off the pavement, which can burn their paws as well as reflect heat back to the pet
• Air conditioning is one of the best ways to keep your pet cool, but it is not always available. Alternatives: Freeze water in soda bottles, or place ice and water in several layers of plastic food storage bags, and wrap with a towel or tube sock. Leave these in the reach of your pet to lay on. Standing fans or ceiling fans help circulate the air and cool your pet as well.
• Keep a close eye on pets with predisposing conditions such as heart disease, obesity, advanced age or breathing problems.
• Consider making or purchasing a “cooling coat” to have on hand for your dog.
• Cooling mats or beds may also be helpful

“On Thursday, June 24, PAWS’ Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic sustained damage after a sudden, intense rainstorm. The building flooded, the roof was damaged, and supplies were lost. To make matters worse, heavy winds knocked down their beautiful new outdoor sign! It’s been smashed to pieces and needs to be replaced – will you chip in to help?

With the clinic still in its first few months of operation, it’s incredibly important to make the public aware of their services, and they can’t do it without a big sign to announce their presence!  We owe it to the animals to spread the word that veterinary care is available for pet owners who cannot otherwise afford or access it.”

Volunteers needed for the annual spring clean-up of Pretzel Park on Saturday, May 8 from 9am-12pm. Walk This Way will be pitching in, and we’re asking our clients to help us make Pretzel Park shine!  We will be painting, trimming, cleaning, sweeping, bagging, moving… you name it, we’ll be doing it!
