We emailed this out to our clients, but somehow the website got overlooked!
Walk This Way Continues our Green Campaign!
In our continuing effort to save out planet while caring for our “kids”, starting on Wednesday, April 22 (Earth Day) Walk This Way will begin exclusively using 100% biodegradable doggie bags! We also left samples of these bags for our clients to try out. We will be offering these bags for sale in the near future. Please contact the office via phone or email for more information.
Poop Bag Facts (from poopbags.com)
- 4 million tons of dog waste annually are not collected by dog owners
- 20-30% of all pollutants in waterways are attributed to dog waste. These pollutants originate from rainwater run-off via sewer systems and dogs pooping near watersheds or beaches. Overall, it is believed dog waste is third or fourth on the list of contributors to bacteria in contaminated waters
- When responsible owners do their *ahem* duty and pick-up, more often than not it is with plastic bags. Plastics are the fourth highest generated waste in the U.S. They originate from petroleum which is non-renewable, do not biodegrade, and take thousands of years to break down
- PoopBags.com bags meet the ASTM D6400 specification for biodegradability and standards in all 50 states. They are made from corn (a renewable resource) and will decompose at a rate comparable to other naturally biodegradable materials, i.e. paper and leaves
In addition to the new bags, Walk This Way invoices are always available in electronic format (PDFs sent via email) in order to cut down on our paper use. If you’re interested in receiving paperless invoices, please email Dara at Dara.walkthisway@comcast.net

HB2525 PASSED! Thanks to everyone who took the time to call and write their representatives!
PA: Victory–Puppy Mill Reform Bill Passes!
PA HB 2525—Changes to the Dog Law
Sponsor(s): Rep. James Casorio and more than 90 cosponsors.
ASPCA Position: SupportUpdate, 10/10/08: Governor Rendell signed HB 2525 into law the night of Thursday, October 9. There is expected to be a bill-signing ceremony sometime next week. The rules regarding euthanasia went into effect immediately—meaning that it is no longer legal for people to shoot their own dogs in Pennsylvania.
Congratulations, Pennsylvania—you did it! At approximately 3:00 P.M. on Wednesday, October 8, the Pennsylvania State Senate passed HB 2525, the puppy mill reform bill, in a landslide vote of 49 to 1. Because there were amendments, the bill had to return to the House of Representatives for concurrence, but the House acted swiftly, passing the final version by a vote of 183 to 7 at around 7:00 P.M. Rep. Art Hershey, an outspoken foe of HB 2525, excused himself from voting at the last minute.
Although we are not pleased with some of the amendments that were added to the final bill, HB 2525 will still require commercial breeders to double the cage space required for dogs. It also prohibits wire flooring and the stacking of cages, mandates exercise for all dogs, requires that ALL dogs receive veterinary care every six months, and requires that animals be humanely euthanized by licensed veterinarians. This legislation will have an enormously positive impact on the lives of tens of thousands of dogs in Pennsylvania’s puppy mills.
What You Can Do
For many months, legislators have been flooded with emails about puppy mill reform, and they listened. If your senator and/or representative voted yes on HB 2525, please take a moment to thank them with a handwritten letter—legislators really do appreciate them! You may find your state representative and senator’s mailing addresses here.
While puppy mills will continue to operate in your state, by passing HB 2525, Pennsylvania ensured that thousands of dogs will be living in better conditions. From the emails and phone calls to the rallies and in-person lobbying, you worked hard to make this law a reality. Thank you, Pennsylvania animal advocates!
New Pet Food Recall
September 26, 2008 at 9:55 pm | In News, Pet Care Tips | Leave a CommentFrom the ASPCA Newsroom:
Warning: New Pet Foods Recalled
The ASPCA is advising pet parents to discontinue the use of certain dog and cat foods manufactured by Mars Petcare US. On September 12, the company issued a nationwide recall of certain foods due to potential contamination with a Salmonella serotype called Schwarzengrund. The recall includes several widely distributed brands of dry pet food, including Pedigree, Special Kitty, Paws & Claws, Natural Dog Food, Red Flannel, Country Acres, Buju & Ziggie, Member’s Mark, Natural Cat Food, Retriever, Bruiser, Doggy Bag, PMI Nutrition and Pet Pride.
“Pet parents should wash their hands after handling any potentially contaminated pet food,” says Dr. Steven Hansen, the ASPCA’s Senior Vice President of Animal Health Services, “and immediately consult with a veterinarian if any signs or symptoms are noticed in their pets.”
For more information on the recall and affected brands, please visit our website. If you suspect your pet has eaten contaminated food, please call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435.

The good news is that senate representatives from our (Philadelphia) area already support HB 2525 (the Puppy Mill Reform Bill), but we need to get the word to other senators around the state that this bill needs to pass! Particularly if you know anyone in Senator Armstrong’s district (part of Lancaster County and York County) please urge them to call or write! Senator Armstrong is the Chairman of the Appropriations committee, where the bill currently awaits approval before it can move on to the senate floor. The deadline is October 8th, if it doesn’t get passed by the Appropriations committee by then, we’ll have to start all over again next year. We really have momentum on our side right now – this topic has generated more public feedback than the PA House of Representatives has ever seen. It passed in the House 181 to 17 !

but we still need your help to make it happen. Please take the time to send your senator a letter! Click the link and fill in the fields, ASPCA will generate the letter and email it for you. You don’t even need to look up the address. The dogs in puppy mills need you to be their advocate!

Dear Pennsylvania Advocates,
On Tuesday, hundreds of you brought your dogs to the Capitol in Harrisburg to rally for puppy mill reform—and it worked! The next day, September 17, both puppy mill bills, HB 2525 and HB 2532, passed the PA House of Representatives in landslide victories.
But the fight is not over! These bill now switch over to the Pennsylvania Senate for consideration—and if the Senate does not pass them by November 30, we will have to start all over again next session.
Representatives told us that this issue generated more phone calls, emails and letters from Pennsylvania residents than any other issue in the state’s history. The Senate is a different body, though, and we need to begin our lobbying efforts anew.
What You Can Do
It is absolutely critical that you contact your state senator and ask that HB 2525 and HB 2532 be supported and passed in the Senate before the end of this legislative session.
Thank you for your dedication to this effort, Pennsylvania.
