Warning: New Pet Foods Recalled
The ASPCA is advising pet parents to discontinue the use of certain dog and cat foods manufactured by Mars Petcare US. On September 12, the company issued a nationwide recall of certain foods due to potential contamination with a Salmonella serotype called Schwarzengrund. The recall includes several widely distributed brands of dry pet food, including Pedigree, Special Kitty, Paws & Claws, Natural Dog Food, Red Flannel, Country Acres, Buju & Ziggie, Member’s Mark, Natural Cat Food, Retriever, Bruiser, Doggy Bag, PMI Nutrition and Pet Pride.
“Pet parents should wash their hands after handling any potentially contaminated pet food,” says Dr. Steven Hansen, the ASPCA’s Senior Vice President of Animal Health Services, “and immediately consult with a veterinarian if any signs or symptoms are noticed in their pets.”
For more information on the recall and affected brands, please visit our website. If you suspect your pet has eaten contaminated food, please call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435.

Do you have friends or family in other parts of PA? Please urge them to click this link:
The good news is that senate representatives from our (Philadelphia) area already support HB 2525 (the Puppy Mill Reform Bill), but we need to get the word to other senators around the state that this bill needs to pass! Particularly if you know anyone in Senator Armstrong’s district (part of Lancaster County and York County) please urge them to call or write! Senator Armstrong is the Chairman of the Appropriations committee, where the bill currently awaits approval before it can move on to the senate floor. The deadline is October 8th, if it doesn’t get passed by the Appropriations committee by then, we’ll have to start all over again next year. We really have momentum on our side right now – this topic has generated more public feedback than the PA House of Representatives has ever seen. It passed in the House 181 to 17 !
YES on HB 2525
For anyone interested, Oprah is doing another show on Puppy Mills, including an update on HB 2525, today (Sept. 25)

Welcome new clients Zach and Zoe!
Zoe and Zach are sibling Jack Russell mixes from Ireland. They used to chase mice and herd cows over in there, but now they are quite content to soak up the Philly sunshine from their favorite window bench. We had a blast with Z&Z while their mom made a visit back to Ireland. They were quite impressed that mom hired a professional-belly-rubber to keep them company while she was gone! Zach & Zoey, it’s great to have you with us!

Dear Pennsylvania Advocates,
On Tuesday, hundreds of you brought your dogs to the Capitol in Harrisburg to rally for puppy mill reform—and it worked! The next day, September 17, both puppy mill bills, HB 2525 and HB 2532, passed the PA House of Representatives in landslide victories.
But the fight is not over! These bill now switch over to the Pennsylvania Senate for consideration—and if the Senate does not pass them by November 30, we will have to start all over again next session.
Representatives told us that this issue generated more phone calls, emails and letters from Pennsylvania residents than any other issue in the state’s history. The Senate is a different body, though, and we need to begin our lobbying efforts anew.
What You Can Do
It is absolutely critical that you contact your state senator and ask that HB 2525 and HB 2532 be supported and passed in the Senate before the end of this legislative session.
Thank you for your dedication to this effort, Pennsylvania.
